When I had my son I didn’t realize I would need a sitter. I hadn’t thought that far ahead.  I was completely distracted by the flurry of preparing for birth, and then the birth itself.

I quickly realized I wouldn’t be able to begin the process of regaining my personal time unless I had help.  I had no idea where to turn, so I began asking friends for recommendations. I was uncomfortable about searching the net for sitters, especially since my son was so young. The sitter I eventually found did not have the qualities I valued for my son, but I didn’t know how to find someone with better skills.

I started this company because I wanted to take the guesswork out of finding a sitter who was engaged with my child and understood his developmental levels. I solved my own sitter problem through educating myself and then using a lot of leg work to track down sitters who understood child development.  I also developed specific interviewing skills, and conducted background and reference checks.

Smart Start Sitters is more than just sitting.  We focus on the team approach by creating continuing educational opportunities for our sitters.  That’s why I developed sitting workshops for my sitters to ensure they are on point.  With the help of my master sitter, we developed a narrative test given to all sitter candidates during their face to face interview with me.

Instead of seeing how “personable” a sitter is in the interview, I challenge my candidates to answer open-ended questions to discern just how much skill they really have with the children they care for, especially in trying circumstances.

Through our extensive process we are able to offer you a predictably high-quality result. Our team approach extends to our families as well as our sitters.  I, personally, am always available to confer with both sitters and clients.

If a Smart Start Sitter is sick, she calls me and I give you a replacement for the day, usually someone you’ve already interviewed through us.
